History

Traditional Chinese Medicine originated in China about 4,000 years ago.  Practices include theories, diagnosis and treatments, such as acupuncture, herbal therapy and nutritional therapy.  Qi gong practices as well as tui na (Chinese massage) are also utilized.

Acupuncture comes from the combination of two latin words, acus, meaning needle and pungere meaning to pierce. Acupuncture is a technique that involves inserting fine, thread-like needles (filiform) into acupuncture points to relieve pain or for theraputic purposes. All acupuncture needles are disposable and are only used once.  Patients report a sense of peacefulness and generally fall asleep during treatment.

Chinese Herbology   The first Chinese Herb Book dated back about 2700 years and contained 365 medicinal plants and their uses - including Ma Huang, the shrub that introduced the drug ephedrine to modern science.

Anthropologists believe that indigenous healers often observed animals in nature to learn which plants were sought out when they were ill.  Modern day biologists have confirmed that sick animals change their diet to nibble at bitter herbs that they would normally reject.  It is believed that medicine people learned by observing and then passed on safety information to others.

Herbology is one of the more important modalities used in Chinese Medicine.  Each herbal prescription is a combination of synergistic herbs tailored to the individual patients' condition.
